Connecting life + water
A living room and screened porch addition on Old Hickory Lake in Nashville, Tennessee.
Lake home Design
Three words for any lake home: views, views, views. This lake house property is located in the Villages of Old Hickory, Tennessee. The homeowners wanted the existing home to be renovated and feel a part of the lake. The design solution? Windows. Large windows. You cannot live on the lake without large windows overlooking the water.
An initial concept which drove the design was a boat archetype with views to the water and multilevel porches. Surrounded by decks, the addition allows for added family space and a large dining area. The roof of the addition reaches out to lake, shading the window wall at the living room and drastically reducing the energy bills from the low lying sun at sunrise and sunset.
Interior finish selections were mostly done by the homeowners with yes/no approval from the the architect. Interiors included a built-in unit for the electric fireplace and TV combo, as well as a matching built-in unit in the dining room for kitchen overflow storage. The white-washed tongue-and-groove pine on the vaulted ceiling and accent walls give the interior a timeless, open feel.
Lake Home Construction
Mark Flick with Integrity Contracting out of Hendersonville performed 95% of the work and allowed the homeowner to assist where possible (what else is a retired engineer to do with his home renovation?!) The contractors demolished the existing two-story deck from the rear of the home to build off out the back.

The foundation for the addition performs double duty: it supports the columns that hold up the new construction, but also serves as a concrete patio for the walk-out basement. The home owners elected to screen-in the walk-out which now houses a pool table and outdoor beverage center.
At the main level, the surrounding deck was installed with durable Trex decking. The contractors cleverly installed a water collection system under the decking to collect and divert any water that hits the deck away to keep the new screened-in porch below dry and usable.
