Gym 5 | Post-Tornado Redesign

ArchiNerd's "Give" for 2020 was to an iconic gym in the 5-points neighborhood of east Nashville. Good health and exercise are essential to happy neighbors - and happy neighbors make for great communities.

Our design solution was to add heated square footage without increasing the footprint. We added over 2,000 square foot of aerobic space via a new mezzanine.

Gym 5 is located on Gallatin Pike in east Nashville and is a local favorite to get shredded. However, after the Nashville tornado in March of 2020, the entire area along with Gym 5 became devastated and destroyed. In an effort to give back to the community during this difficult time, we volunteered our services and worked with the owners to not only restore Gym 5, but also improve the building layout.

Before and After

A 1-story basement gym was transformed into a light-filled 2-story gym.

The foundation of the building was able to be salvaged, and with some strategic planning -- and help from the updated International Building Code -- we were able to build up to add a second floor mezzanine. During a time with air quality is critical, we added 5 large glass garage doors provide natural light and fresh air on nice days.

All design work was truly a collaborative effort involving gym owners, gym patrons and design consultants. Even specific workouts were accounted for while working within the restrictions of a finite budget.
